Implementing strategies with agility and effectiveness

The implementation of strategic goals often falls short of expectations, but with agile methods such as OKR (Objectives & Key Results), strategies can be effectively integrated into everyday work.

What are OKRs?

Objectives and Key Results, or OKR for short, is an agile goal management system for strategy implementation and validation. Self-organized teams define OKR sets at brief strategic implementation intervals – for example, quarterly – that are derived from the strategic directions. An OKR set usually consists of 2-4 goals, each with a maximum of 3-4 key results. The system ensures that at regular intervals, at the latest at the end of an interval, successes are rigorously evaluated, learnings are derived, and new OKRs are defined for the next interval. Full transparency about the results between the teams is a central principle. This routine enables employees and teams to focus on strategic issues in addition to day-to-day business and to make measurable contributions to move the organization towards the vision.

Introduction of OKR

The initial introduction of OKR involves sharing OKR knowledge, implementing the OKR process, and defining OKRs for the first cycle within selected teams. A typical implementation starts with 2-3 pilot teams and extends over 1-2 quarters, allowing the organization to get used to the OKR system. In the pilot phase, valuable experience is collected for further rollout and continuous development.
